Ms account, with extracts from contemporary letters, of his service as a Captain, later Major with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, 46th Brigade, 15th Division (June - November 1944) including details of their landing in France on 17 June 1944, their assault on Cheux during the Battle of Odon (25 June - 27 June), their assault on Esquay (13-18 July 1944), their assault on Quarry Hill, south of Caumont (24-31 July 1944), their advance through Normandy towards the Seine, south of Falaise, the crossing, and the capture of Couverville (11-31 August 1944), their advance through northern France and Belgium and operations to clear Ghent (1-11 September 1944), their entry into the Netherlands and role in the capture of Best (12 September - 28th October and operations to clear Tilburg and Liesel (29th October - 2 November 1944). The narrative also refers to the reception given to Allied troops in the liberated areas of northern Europe, reports of reprisals on collaborators, the effect of witnessing the airborne force of Operation MARKET on the morale of the ground forces and also commenting on the quality of Allied and German rations.
