Official records of his naval career, including his official record of service from entry as a boy up to promotion to petty officer (December 1919 - September 1930), his Gunnery history sheet (1921 - 1930), his results in the examination for warrant officers in navigation (December 1930), his series of 29 flimsies (March 1931 - July 1953) and a carbon copy of a letter from Captain (later Vice Admiral) E W L Longley-Cook to Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Tovey concerning his qualities as a naval officer (14 September 1945); four desk diaries for 1937 - 1940 covering his service as a Gunner borne for flotilla duties in HMS HARDY, HMS HOSTILE and other ships of the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla, Mediterranean Fleet, including references to the Flotilla's deployment in Spanish waters during the Spanish Civil War and to the Mediterranean Fleet's preparations for possible war at the time of the Munich crisis and the Italian invasion of Albania (January 1937 - May 1939), his attendance on courses at shore establishments in Chatham and Portsmouth and promotion to Lieutenant (September 1939 - January 1940) and his appointment as gunnery officer in the cruiser HMS CARADOC which was employed on patrol duties on the North America and West Indies Station (June - December 1940); a collection of contemporary presscuttings covering aspects of the history of the cruiser HMS ARGONAUT during the Second World War; an ms letter (2pp with envelope), dated 29 April 1950, from Lieutenant HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in the destroyer HMS CHEQUERS concerning the conduct of a naval rating; and a wooden plaque and three associated photographs relating to the passage in the battleship HMS MALAYA in 1921 of a bear presented to the Duke of Connaught during his visit to the Straits Settlements.
