Photocopied papers written and/or compiled by Ward concerning the 42nd Armoured Engineer Regiment (42nd Armoured Division) RE and its predecessor units, comprising: an account (48pp ts) of the regiment's early history and in particular its operations during the Second World War (BEF and retreat to Dunkirk 1940, home defence in various parts of England 1940 - 1941, various training exercises until the disbandment of 42nd Armoured Division in late 1943, subsequent creation of 42nd Assault Regiment RE and a brief narrative of its operations in Normandy, August - September 1944); more detailed account (62pp ts) of the activities of 42nd Assault Regiment RE during the Second World War, compiled from his own and others' recollections and giving a brief history of the Regiment's formation, training and describing the equipment it employed, preparations for deployment in Normandy following the June 1944 landings and arrival at Arromanches in August 1944, and concluding with a detailed analysis of its role in the liberation of Le Havre in the following month; concluding narrative (6pp ts) of the Regiment's subsequent activities in the Low Countries until May 1945; history (25pp ts) of the work of 617 Assault Squadron RE (of which Ward was 2nd in command) during the preparations for the Rhine crossings, 1944 - 1945, and their execution in Operation Plunder, March 1945; an expanded version of this account (124pp ts) with associated maps and appendices.
