Engaging ms journal (387pp, with a microfilm copy) with many interesting enclosures, together with six pocket diaries for 1914 - 1919 and a photocopied ts memoir (38pp) written in 1979 covering his enlistment and training in the 10th (Service) Battalion (1st Hull), East Yorkshire Regiment, September 1914 - December 1915, and subsequent service with the Battalion (92nd Brigade, 31st Division) in Egypt, December 1915 - February 1916, and in France including preparations for the Battle of the Somme, March - July 1916, before transferring to the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment (50th Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division) with whom he remained in France from August 1916 until he was wounded during the Battle of Arras in April 1917; then with an officer cadet battalion in Ireland, November 1917 - April 1918; and as a subaltern in the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment (16th Brigade, 6th Division) during the final Allied advance on the Western Front, September - November 1918, and with the Army of Occupation in Germany, December 1918 - March 1919.
