Pocket diary for 1941 containing entries written in minute handwriting for July 1941 - April 1945, ms diary (22pp) for April - October 1945 mainly written on the backs of letters and envelopes and a notebook containing an ms diary (26pp) for October - November 1945, with complete bound ts transcript including additional material (515pp), covering his service as a bombardier in the 80th Anti-Tank Regiment RA during the voyage on the troopship SCYTHIA to the Far East and their service under 11th Indian Division in the Malayan campaign (August 1941 - February 1942), and his experiences as a prisoner of war in Changi camp, Singapore (February - June 1942) and in Thailand in the camps on the Burma - Siam railway at Non Pladuk (June - September 1942), Tamarkan (September 1942 - September 1943), Non Pladuk again (September 1943 - June 1944) and Nakom Paton (June 1944 - April 1945), on the Mergui Road (April - June 1945) and at Nakom Paton again (June - August 1945), and during his repatriation via Rangoon and on the troopship ORBITA (September - November 1945); together with ms notes (14pp, with 11pp ts transcript) on his time on the Mergui Road written during his repatriation, seven postcards to his father from Changi and camps on the Burma - Siam railway (June 1942 - May 1944), undated non-escape declaration (2pp) signed by officers and men in the 80th Anti-Tank Regiment RA probably while in Changi, a ts list (5pp) of casualties in 215 Battery, 80th Anti-Tank Regiment RA up to the fall of Singapore submitted to the War Office in November 1945, a collection of pencil sketches executed at Non Pladuk in October - November 1943 including a portrait of Young by W C Wilder, a series of ms and ts letters (some forty originals, the remainder photocopies) to Young from his brother principally covering the latter's service as a private in the RAMC attached to No 7 CCS in Iraq and Persia (January 1942 - February 1944) and to the Venereal Disease Centre at the Military Hospital in Chester (August - October 1945), and a small number of other original documents and photocopies relating to Young's time in captivity.
