Photocopy of his ts account (76pp including index and 6 maps) describing his career as an officer with the Burma Frontier Force (BFF) and with the 4th Burma Regiment in Burma, September 1940 - ?September 1945, including: peacetime soldiering with the Reserve Battalion of the Burma Frontier Force at Pyawbwe, Burma, September 1940 - August 1941; as a junior officer with the newly formed 4th Burma Frontier Force (F F 4) in the Shan States, training at Loilem, September - November 1941, and in defensive positions near Mongpan, November 1941 - February 1942, much weakened by losses from malaria and clashing with Thai troops; the withdrawal to Monghang and transfer by lorry to southern Burma, February - March 1942; operations with the 1st Burma Division on the Toungoo front and the subsequent retreat, March 1942; the disbandment of F F 4 and service with F F 9 in the chaotic retreat from the Irrawaddy into India, April - June 1942; service with the 4th Battalion The Burma Regiment, notably formation and training in Hoshiarpur, India, October 1942 - October 1943; as a company commander in the Kachin Hills, operating against Japanese lines of communications in Burma, October 1943 - March 1944, and the advance on Myitkyina, March - April 1944, when he was wounded; as commander of SCOCOL, a jungle force, in the crossing of the Nsop Hka and the capture of Myitkyina, June - July 1944; training in Hoshiarpur, India, and as CO hunting dacoits in the Arakan, July 1944 - ?September 1945; commenting on prewar army life; his fellow officers; his relations with his NCOs and men; the poor treatment of the families of the BFF soldiers; Japanese atrocities; the Kachin Levies and Gurkha troops; the conditions in Burma; American air support; his dislike of staff officers; the importance of the medical services; and mentioning Field Marshals Lord Alexander, Lord Slim (p.20), and General J Stilwell, who was hated by both his British and American troops (p.67).
