Ms Midshipman's Journal (225pp) covering his service in the cruiser HMS CORNWALL on the South Atlantic station, May 1940 - August 1941, and describing her employment principally on ocean convoy escort, mainly between the United Kingdom and South Africa till the end of 1940 and subsequently between South Africa and Aden, but also on raider patrols in the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, with interesting references to the operations off Dakar (September 1940), her interception of the Vichy French ships INDOCHINOIS and VILLE DE MAJUNGA (October 1940 and March 1941 respectively) and the warmth of the hospitality accorded to the ship's company in South Africa and a particularly graphic account of CORNWALL's interception and sinking of the German surface raider PINGUIN in the Indian Ocean (8 May 1941), as well as the usual accounts of evolutions and training carried out in the ship; together with his official record and certificates (form E.190) as a cadet and midshipman (1939 - 1941), twenty flimsies from the course of his naval career (January 1941 - June 1966), four certificates from his courses for promotion to the rank of Lieutenant (February - April 1942) and correspondence relating to the award to him of the MBE (January 1963).
