Ts transcription (22pp) of a diary account recording his service as a Lance Corporal briefly with the 16th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (86th Brigade, 29th Division) but mainly the 22nd Battalion Manchester Regiment (91st Brigade, 7th Division) in France and Belgium, June 1916 - December 1917, and Italy, December 1917 - April 1918, containing interesting descriptions of his involvement in the Battle of the Somme (July - September 1916), the Allied advance to the Hindenburg Line (March - April 1917) and the Third Battle of Ypres (October 1917), trench conditions on the Western Front, the comparative luxury of life out of the line, the use of poison gas, Christmas celebrations, the attempted rescue of three men trapped in a mud-filled trench, and German troops moving under cover of the Red Cross flag.
