Private Papers of Lieutenant Colonel N MacLeod OBE
A brief ts memoir (13pp) and a small number of ms letters written to his future wife and covering a large part of his military career as a Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers (87th Brigade, 29th Division) in Gallipoli, with the 87th Company Machine Gun Corps on the Western Front, 1916 - 1917, as a prisoner of war in Holzminden POW camp, 1917 - 1918, with the 2nd Battalion of the Slavo-British Allied Legion in Archangel, 1919, his period in the Egyptian Army and the Sudan Defence Force, 1921 - 1928, then as a Major with the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers (9th Brigade, 3rd Division) in France, 1940, in Egypt, 1945 - 1946, as GSO III at the HQ of the 223rd West Africa Infantry Garrison Group, MELF, and finally in Palestine, 1947 - 1948, where he was serving in the Military Courts. Also included are photographs and programmes / menus of Holzminden anniversary reunion dinners.
Military conflict took place during every year of the 20th Century. There were only short periods of time that the world was free of war. The total number of deaths caused by war during the 20th Century has been estimated at 187 million and is probably higher.
