Photocopies of a series of ts memoirs (47pp), written in the 1990s, covering his conscription into the Leicestershire Regiment (November 1939), his training at their depot in Leicester and his passage with a draft to India, sailing from Marseilles in the troopship NEURALIA (February 1940), his service as a private and later lance-corporal with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment at Agra, India (February 1940 - February 1941), on the island of Penang (February - May 1941) and at Sungei Patani in north Malaya (June - August 1941) and as a cadet on No 4 Course at the Far East OCTU in Changi, Singapore (September - December 1941) in each case with useful comments about aspects of his military and social life; with useful comments about military and social life on garrison duty in India (February 1940 - February 1941); and some anecdotal recollections concerning his experiences, now as a subaltern in the 2nd Battalion East Surrey Regiment, as a prisoner of war on the Burma-Siam railway (October 1942 - August 1945) including the story of a fellow officer prisoner of war who kept a dachshund with him throughout his time on the railway, a curious encounter with two Japanese army officers when he was caught outside his camp boundaries, and some reflections on the effect on morale among the prisoners of the Japanese failure to release mail to them so that he only learnt after his liberation of his father's death over two years before; together with a ts poem (1p) about deaths on the Burma-Siam railway.
