258 ms letters written to and from his fiancee and members of his family, September 1939 - October 1945, of a mostly personal nature but containing some references to her evacuation to Norwich with a party of school children, September - October 1939, her work in the Censorship Department as a typist, October 1939 - October 1945, the Blitz, V weapon attacks and general war-time conditions in London, his army training in radar after he joined the Royal Artillery in April 1941, and his time as a prisoner of war in the Far East, December 1941 - August 1945; there are many gaps in the series of letters (particularly for the period December 1941 - August 1945). Together with a good photocopied ts account (31pp, written in 1984) describing his service as a Lance Bombardier with 30 Battery, 3rd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA (under Major Rowley Conwy) immediately before the fall of Singapore, his escape to Sumatra in the HOCK SIEW and other small boats via nameless semi-deserted islands, the friction with fellow escapees, their evacuation across Sumatra, and his capture at Padang on 17 March 1942; the account contains tributes to the work of Brigadier F S Dillon and Colonel Warren on Sumatra, and criticisms of the Dutch.
