66 ms letters (195pp), September 1916 - January 1919, covering his initial training at Warminster and active service from February 1917 as a Rifleman with the 2/11th Battalion The London Regiment (175th Brigade, 58th Division) in France, including interesting references to the presence of conscientious objectors at Warminster and descriptions of conditions in France, his recreational activities and concerns for demobilisation, praise for Australian troops, the threat posed by enemy aircraft, and his evacuation back to Britain in June 1917 with shrapnel wounds, leading to his hospitalisation at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, then at Altrincham Red Cross Hospital, Cheshire (July - December 1917 and July - September 1918), St John Auxiliary Military Hospital, Morecambe (January - May 1917 and November 1918 - January 1919), Vernon Park Hospital, Cheshire (June 1918), 2nd Western General Hospital, Cheshire (July 1918), and Grange Street Military Hospital, Manchester (October 1918); while in Britain he describes the frustration of hospitalisation, the support of local people for the patients, his realisation of the longevity of the war and the likelihood of another one, and his wait for demobilisation.
