Photocopied ts transcript (66pp) of a daily diary written during service as a subaltern with the 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, attached after February 1917 to the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment (Jullundur Brigade, 3rd Lahore Division) in Mesopotamia, December 1916 - March 1917, describing his voyage out and impressions of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Basra, his fascination with the black people in South Africa, Christmas celebrations aboardship, German houses gutted by fire in reaction to the sinking of the LUSITANIA, his praise for the YMCA and interest in photography, the apparent apathy of the Turkish troops around Kut, the use of bombs to catch fish, the debris of battle and burying of the dead, and the exhaustion of forced marches, together with modern biographical notes and an account of the historical context written by his niece, two pages from the Regimental War Diary for the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment (16 - 28 March 1917), and several maps relating to his movements.
