A series of 18 ms letters (42pp, November 1915 - January 1916) written to his fiancee and later wife relating to his wounding during service as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (73rd Brigade, 24th Division) in France, including letters from his Medical Officer describing his condition, the padre at No 10 Casualty Clearing Station warning of the unlikelihood of his recovery but stressing his bravery, nurses describing Christmas celebrations, a fellow soldier outlining the situation in his absence, and from himself written under dictation, together with an earlier series of 58 ms letters (202pp, April 1914 - October 1915) written during training with the 10th Battalion at Dover, Colchester and Shoreham, being of a generally personal nature and including his proposal of marriage but also describing his organisation of trench combat training; 16 ms letters (67pp, September 1917 - April 1918) written during training at Oxford and then active service from December 1917 on the Western Front, describing Christmas celebrations and sporting events, his second wounding from shrapnel (January 1918) and evacuation to the Countess of Pembroke's Hospital at Salisbury, his recollection of the decimation of his Company, criticisms of war correspondents, and his love of literature; 7 ms letters (39pp, October 1918 - early 1919) written during a speaking tour of the United States, giving his impressions of America and criticisms of armistice celebrations, plus a ts train schedule for his tour (1p), an ms pocket diary (62pp, October - December 1918) and a notebook with detailed ms notes (94pp) on tactics, engineering, signals, pay and allowances, discipline, and German Army organisation; photocopies (5pp) of his commission, birth and marriage certificates and a newspaper obituary, an ms letter (4pp, November 1939) from a Captain in the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment, and 2 photographs.
