A collection of 163 letters and cards written home to his mother whilst serving as Regimental Medical Officer with the 3rd Battalion The Grenadier Guards in Italy during the Second World War and in Palestine afterwards (August 1944 - January 1947). Together with: a photograph of Knowles; a ts transcription (5pp) of memories and anecdotes, taken from a short piece he did for his local BBC Radio station in 1995, of his time as a Regimental Medical Officer in Italy and Palestine attached to the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards (6th Armoured Division, Fifth Army) in Italy (from mid 1944), with details of crossing the River Po in a DUKW, and moving to Haifa (1945), with brief details of his duties, terrorism in Palestine, and treating VD and TB; a Battalion Order (2pp) mentioning Captain Knowles' Mention in Despatches (July 1946); a ts Operation Order (4pp) for Operation 'Agatha' and a ts Operation Order (2pp) for Operation 'Thrush', both dated August 1946, and targeted against Jewish terrorists in Palestine.
