An interesting ms diary (270pp) and series of 20 ms letters written by Sidney Lane, a soldier in the Canadian Pioneers (1st Division, Canadian Expeditionary Force) covering his training in the United Kingdom and service on the Western Front, November 1915 - October 1917; a few other ms letters from soldiers on active service, August 1915 - October 1918, including one from a private in the 3rd East Lancashire Field Ambulance (42nd Division) who survived the sinking of the troopship ROYAL EDWARD in the Mediterranean on 13 August 1915; and a valuable series of 250 ms and ts letters written between 1939 and 1945 to Mr Strong in South Africa by his family and friends in Britain, the United States, Australia and Canada describing and commenting at length on the effect of the war on the civilian populations, including letters from a Colonel Randall and his daughter Mrs Scott about the German occupation of the Channel Islands and the deportation of some of their inhabitants to internment camps in Germany.
