Photocopies of an ms and ts diary (519pp) in three volumes kept as the Commanding Officer of the 8th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, the machine gun Battalion of the 43rd Division, from June 1944 - July 1945 and covering in great detail their embarkation at Tilbury and crossing to Normandy (12 - 23 June), their operations in Normandy including the fighting for Hill 112 and the taking of Mont Pincon (June - August), their part in the crossing of the Seine and the advance through Belgium to the Netherlands (August - September), their winter operations in the Netherlands (October - January), their service in the advance to and crossing of the Rhine (February - March) and in the campaign in northern Germany (April - May) and their deployment with the Army of Occupation in Germany (May - June). The diaries, which include interesting entries about the higher direction of the Battalion's operations, the quality of German soldiers and their military equipment and the behaviour of newly liberated French, Belgian and Dutch civilians, are accompanied by copies of Battalion operation orders, Divisional and Battalion news-sheets and other official records.
