Ts memoir of service as a NCO with the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) 1939 - 1946, the first volume (334pp) covering the period from his enlistment in December 1939 and training before being posted to the 14th Troop Carrying Company (101st Company) as a clerk in February 1940; he served with the BEF in April and May 1940, sometimes under aerial attack, and notes low morale and bad leadership in his unit; evacuated from La Parma, he was sent to North Wales and later Surrey, where the company was disbanded; in October 1940 he was posted to Egypt, travelling via the Cape of Good Hope, joining the 21st Troop Carrying Company (67th Company) near Cairo in December 1940 as a Corporal Clerk; he gives a vivid and detailed description of daily life in Cairo as a Sergeant Cipher Clerk. A second volume (306pp) concerns his transfer in August 1941 to the 4th Indian Division in the Western Desert; as a member of the rear divisional HQ he only served in the wake of 'Crusader', El Alamein and other operations, though coming under air attack at times, until transferred in March 1943; the memoir details everyday life and conditions in the Desert. A third volume (342pp) concerns his work as a cipher operator during the Second World War, covering the period from the battle of Mareth in March 1943 to the end of the war and events leading to his demobilisation in 1946.
