21 ms letters written to his wife while serving as executive officer of the battle cruiser HMS INVINCIBLE, September 1914 - October 1915, including a hundred page one containing a graphic account of the Battle of the Falkland Islands; photostat copies of 7 ms letters written to his brother, October 1914 - August 1915 with observations on the progress of the war, and condemnation of conscientious objectors and strikers; a brief ts account (12pp) of the Battle of the Falkland Islands, virtually identical in content to the letters; souvenirs of HMS INVINCIBLE's celebrations on the first anniversary of the Battle of the Falkland Islands, consisting of concert programmes, illustrated menus and a message of good wishes from Vice Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee; a notebook containing notes on signalling and illustrations; an ms letter from Admiral Sir David Beatty to Mrs R H D Townsend in December 1916 apparently acknowledging her congratulations on his promotion (Commander Townsend had lost his life when INVINCIBLE was sunk in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916); and various Christmas cards, menus, miscellaneous documents, watercolours and photographs.
