Bound and edited ts transcript (110pp), with an introductory biographical note, of his well-written letters to his family during his service on the Western Front as a private and NCO in the machine gun section of the 17th (Service) Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) (2nd Division) from November 1915 - October 1916, and then as a subaltern in the 49th Machine Gun Company (16th Division) between June and August 1917; the letters include good accounts of conditions in the trenches, the state of their billets and dealings with French civilians as well as brief references to the fighting at Delville Wood on the Somme in August 1916 and the opening stages of 3rd Ypres, while there are also statements about his attitude towards the war and religious practices on active service. Williams, who had been a journalist with the London News Agency, was killed in action on 16 August 1917 and an appendix to the volume contains copies of various letters of condolence.
