Ms pocket diary, with edited ts transcript (44pp) and updated wordprocessed transcript (69pp), covering his service as a regular NCO with the 1st Battalion Scots Guards (1st Division) on the Western Front (August - October 1914) which included taking part in the Battle of the Aisne and the First Battle of Ypres when he was captured; experiences as a prisoner of war at Schneidemuhl near Posen (November 1914 - August 1915), and then at Preussengrube (September 1915 - July 1918) and Myslowitz Grube, both near Neuhammer near the Polish border where he had to work in the coal mines, and giving good descriptions of the bad conditions in which the POWs lived and worked as well as recording the large numbers of deaths and injuries amongst the POW and civilian workers; and his journey home to England (December 1918 - January 1919). Also, 5 postcards with brief messages to his parents (1910 - 1912) and an original photograph of him in uniform (1919).
