Description
Object description
Ts memoir (58pp) of his life up to 1938, mainly spent in business in India, but including an extremely well-written section on his service on the Western Front as a company commander in the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (32 Division to February 1918, then 36th Division) from late 1915 until his capture on the first day of the German spring 1918 offensive and his subsequent very depressing experiences as a wounded prisoner of war in the officers' camp at Mainz, April - November 1918. The memoirs include excellent descriptions of the horrors of trench warfare, his duties as a picket officer during the major mutiny at Etaples in 1917 and the fighting leading to his capture, while the narrative also contains interesting comments about the morale of his Battalion and some strongly-worded criticisms of the British Higher Command.
