Notebook containing ms transcripts (36pp) of letters written mainly to his mother (December 1915 - April 1916) while serving as Acting Adjutant with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards (Guards Division) on the Western Front, describing bad conditions in the trenches and a brief leave in Paris; and 35 original ms letters written from the Duchess of Westminster's Hospital at Le Touquet where he was recovering from a wound (April 1916); as a staff officer at HQ 20th Division, with an account of interrogating German prisoners of war (March - April 1917), at HQ 5th Army, with general comments on the progress of the War, interesting references to Anglo-French and Franco-American relations and descriptions of further leaves in Paris (May 1917 - March 1918); with the General Staff, 4th Army, commenting on the German Offensive and on General Rawlinson, and comparing HQ 4th Army unfavourably with HQ 5th Army (April - May 1918); and at HQ 141 Infantry Brigade (June - August 1918). Also certificates of the award of the German Mother's Cross, third class, 1945, and an undated message of congratulations on completion of one year's service (capacity unspecified) from Hindenburg.
