19 ms letters from a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery written to his wife principally while he was undergoing training at Biscot Camp, Luton (4 September - 5 October 1916) with references to kit issue, his duties and efforts to see his family, together with brief entries for 1918 and 1919 in his 1918 diary made while he was serving with an unidentified RFA unit in Mesopotamia and India and his service papers including a pre-war discharge certificate from the Essex Regiment Territorial Force, 1908 - 1916; also 93 ms letters and 4 cards from his wife, Edith, in Walthamstow, London, dated 6 September 1916 - 23 February 1919, giving a clear picture of her anguish at the long period of separation from her husband and with interesting references to enemy air raids on East London (June, July 1917, January, February and May 1918), food shortages and the introduction of rationing (December 1917 and January 1918) and the influenza epidemic (July, October 1918), together with 11 ms letters and 2 cards from other relatives, 1916 - 1919, and 10 ms and ts letters and 1 card from friends and erstwhile colleagues, 1916 - 1919.
