Ts memoir (304pp), written in 1977 in two volumes, covering his life as an artist from 1900 to 1961 in which he describes his childhood in Tyldsley and his early training in the Manchester School of Art, followed by his service in the First World War as a wireless telegraphist in the Royal Navy, training at the Crystal Palace and then serving in the tug BLACKCOCK on salvage work and towing off the coast of Africa, in the Persian Gulf, and in the English Channel, until the boat was finally lost after an accident in the White Sea in January 1918, after which he briefly served in a trawler fitted with a hydrophone for anti-submarine work, before he was demobilised to return to his studies at the Royal College of Art, his subsequent career in advertising and his work during the Second World War work on Government propaganda which included his invention of the 'Squander Bug' character.
