Two ts accounts, the first (31pp), written in December 1940, describing how in December 1939 the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters, of which he was the second in command, had been selected, together with the two other battalions in the 3rd Infantry Brigade, for a three week tour of duty on the Saar under the French army and giving details of their routine when occupying the forward areas in close proximity to the Germans and his impressions of the Maginot Line fortifications; and the second (41pp plus maps and a later 2pp note by his widow), written in August 1940, providing an hour-by-hour description of his service in France from 15 - 31 May 1940 and the confusion of the BEF's retreat and covering in particular his initial employment organising groups of I Corps rear echelon men as an emergency reserve, his return from 24 May to the 2nd Sherwood Foresters (1st Division, subsequently 5th Division) including constant harassment by German aircraft, the action at Gapaard when he took command of the Battalion, the withdrawal to Bray-les-Dunes and their evacuation from Dunkirk in the SS MALINES; together with a copy print of a group photograph of the Battalion's officers and a laser copy photograph of Colonel Wright in uniform.
