Object description
Ms diary (93pp in German September - December 1940) written on toilet paper, describing his route to England from Czechoslovakia as a Jewish refugee in the mid 1930's, his work on a farm in southern England until his 'arrest' in July 1940 and his internment at Huyton (Liverpool) and Camps Q (Monteith) and I (Ile aux Noix, Quebec) in Canada including his voyage then in the liner ETTRICK. He describes the sense of confusion at what was happening, the feelings (largely of resentment) among fellow internees, their 'captor's' treatment of them as enemies (including taking finger-prints and 'mug shots'), the partition of internees into Gentiles and Jews (October 1940) and the circumstances leading to their release. The diary has a cover with a watercolour painting of an internment camp with tents and watchtower, and a steam train beneath Austrian, Czechoslovakian, and British flags. Together with: a photocopy of a ts edited translation (58pp); a notebook containing ms of (other people's) poems, transcribed in camp; his Aliens Order 1920 Certificate of Registration, No. 642239, 1939/40.
