94 letters written to his family while serving in the RCS with 5th Indian Divisional Signals, December 1939 - October 1942, in the Sudan, Eritrea, Cyprus, and in the North African campaign; then with 10th Indian Divisional Signals, October 1942 - September 1943, in Paiforce and in Syria; with 68th Field Regiment, RA (10th Indian Division) in Syria, Palestine, and Italy, September 1943 - June 1944; attached to the Training Company Depot Battalion, RCS, Thirsk, August 1944 - September 1945 and finally with the 73rd Medium Regiment, RA Wireless Telegraphy Section in Germany, October 1945 - April 1946, in which he mainly talks about his health, family matters and friends, 39 letters from his family, August 1942 - November 1945, talking about family affairs and conditions in Whitely Bay, Northumberland and 38 letters from friends, mainly men with whom he had previously served, October 1944 - October 1953, discussing the fate of mutual friends, and describing life in the army in general and conditions in the Army of Occupation in Germany in particular; together with ms diary/memoir (9pp) describing the voyage out and his early experiences in India, July - December 1939, and pocket diaries for 1940, 1942, 1944, 1945 and 1946 containing very brief entries, some relating to the fighting in North Africa, June - September 1942; 6 letters concerning his pay and requests by his parents for his repatriation, and various miscellaneous documents relating to his military Service.
