Ms extracts, prepared by his mother (both 3pp), from his last letter (23 September 1915) written while serving as a junior officer in the 6th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers (28th Brigade, 9th Division) shortly before his death on the first day of the Battle of Loos, expressing his deep religious conviction and describing the comfort he has found in the DAILY LIGHT prayerbook that she gave him, together with the DAILY LIGHT to which he referred, an ms letter (2pp, June 1919) from a Captain serving in the British Army of the Rhine forwarding the book to his mother with the explanation that it was found on his body after his death by a German officer, an ms letter (2pp, June 1919) to his mother from the sister of the German officer expressing her sympathy and the hope that the book will be of comfort to her, an ms transcription prepared by the sister (2pp) of an account written by the German officer of the circumstances under which the book was found, a modern ts transcription of the correspondence (3pp), three calling cards printed when he was a student at Exeter College, Oxford and an ms postcard to his father (18 September 1915) thanking him for a parcel
