A collection of some 300 ms letters and postcards to his family in Bristol covering his service as a junior officer in the 2/5th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry during their troopship voyage to India (December 1914) and their employment on garrison duty and further training in Burma (February 1915 - April 1917) and India (May 1917 - November 1918), his transfer to the 2/76th Punjabis in November and service with the Battalion in India (December 1918 - October 1919), on the North West Frontier as part of the Waziristan Field Force during the 3rd Afghan War (October 1919 - May 1920), back in India (November 1920 - March 1921), in Mesopotamia on garrison duties following the unrest there (April 1921 - May 1922) and finally in India again (June - August 1922) and also containing his thoughts on many military and political issues of the moment; together with some 30 ms letters to his family, 1914 - 1919, from relatives and friends serving, also mostly as junior officers, with the Royal Engineers in Egypt and Palestine (1916 - 1918), the 11th Battalion Welsh Regiment in Salonika (1916), the 1/4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and the 48th Divisional Salvage Company in France and Italy (1915 - 1917), No 3 Wing RNAS at the Dardanelles (1915 - 1916), an Allied hospital in Paris (1916), No 66 Squadron RFC in France (1917) and the 1/4th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry in India and the Andaman Islands (1916).
