Photocopies of the ts transcriptions of four letters (6pp), April - November 1944, written to his Batman and his mother while serving with the 2nd Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment (8th Brigade, 3rd Division) in the UK and North-West Europe, including: promising to look after her son, his low opinion of higher authorities, and refusing to lead his company in "any damn suicide act", April 1944; landing on Sword Beach on D-Day, "fighting the toughest troops in the German Army - Panzers", and hoping to "be home for Christmas", July 1944; describing the action in which his Batman was wounded, his efforts to get him evacuated, and listing the Battalion's casualties since D-Day, August 1944; outlining his appointment as 2nd in command, the replacement of the Brigadier E E E Cass who had been wounded, the decorations received by the Battalion, the experiences of the Battalion in Belgium and the Netherlands, and enclosing "a Xmas present" to be spent on beer, November 1944.
