Ms account (6pp) written c.1980 by A J Blackett of his service with No 271 Squadron, RAF (1942 - 1946), including a good description of his duty on the 'Jeeptrains' supplying Allied troops at Monte Cassino with provisions and ammunition (May 1944), the story of an Italian girl, Carmelia Espoito, who handed fruit to the soldiers as they came through 'Death Valley' at Monte Cassino, and an ms copy of the address made by General H R Alexander, Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Armies in Italy, to the Allied troops in Italy (May 1944), together with 3 ms and ts letters written to Mr Blackett during the 1980's, two (3pp) from V Acheson, who served with 78th Division in Italy and briefly describes the entrance of his regiment (unidentified) into Austria and the rounding up of the Germans, and who also tells the story of Carmelia, and the other letter (2pp) from L F Humphrey, outlining his career during the Second World War, including service in SS STRATHALLEN (which was sunk in 1942), his passage back to England working on the DUCHESS OF RICHMOND after being picked up on the beaches of Oran, and his service in M V AARANGI in Sicily and Italy (1943 - 1944).
