A series of 66 ms letters and postcards, together with a ts transcript (106pp), to his family in London covering his crossing to France with a draft for the 1/28th Battalion (Artist's Rifles) London Regiment (December 1914), his service as a private with the Battalion, effectively an OTC, on general duties at Bailleul and St Omer (January - May 1915), his eventual decision to apply for a commission and attendance at the Officer Cadet School at Blendecques (June - July 1915) and his service as a subaltern in the 1st Battalion East Kent Regiment (16th Brigade, 6th Division) from August till he died of wounds in December 1915, including good descriptions of an attack at Hooge in August, tours of duty in the Ypres Salient, conditions in the trenches and his life and responsibilities as a junior officer, together with letters of condolence to his family from his commanding officer and men in his Battalion (December 1915 - February 1916)
