Description
Object description
Ts memoir (87pp) written in the (?) 1970s. describing how she (then a teenager) and her mother, the Russian wife of a Dutch bank manager in Java, were interned by the Japanese occupation forces in Bantjieuh prison in Bandoeng (October 1942 - January 1943) and then briefly in Tjahabit camp in Bandoeng (early 1943) before being moved to a women's camp at Kampong Makassar in Batavia where her elder sister was interned and they remained till their liberation in August 1945. The narrative records the appalling conditions in Bantjieuh (where half the 33 women and children in their cell died), the chronic shortages of food and medical supplies in the other camps, the selfish behaviour of some of their fellow internees, the total unpredictability of their Japanese guards and the consequent uncertainty of an internee's existence, but much of the text reflects the profound impact of her experiences during those years on the development of her Orthodox Christian faith and philosophy towards life.
