Description
Object description
Three letters written to members of his family while serving as the Captain RM in the battle cruiser HMS INFLEXIBLE, the first (8pp ms transcript, December 1914) giving a graphic account of the ship's part in the Battle of the Falkland Islands and emphasising the enthusiasm of the ship's company at the prospect of action and the suffering of the survivors from the GNEISENAU, the second (2pp ms, May 1915) written from Malta and referring to newspaper reports on the Dardanelles campaign and the third (4pp ms with envelope, June 1916) describing HMS INFLEXIBLE's service in the 3rd Battle Cruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland and commenting on the outcome of the action and his feelings about the heavy loss of life on the British side. In both battles Sinclair's action station was in a turret and so his view was limited, but he does capture the atmosphere in HMS INFLEXIBLE.
