Object description
Ms Midshipman's Journal covering his service in the 2nd Battle Squadron, Home Fleet, first in HMS HIBERNIA (January - December 1911) and then in HMS ORION (January 1912 - February 1913), giving the usual details of the ships' routine, evolutions, gunnery practices and fleet exercises and also including interesting descriptions of King George V's Coronation Naval Review at Spithead (June 1911), the Royal Review at Dublin (July 1911) and the July 1912 naval manoeuvres; together with 13 ms letters to his family and 33 ms edited transcripts of others written during his service as a junior officer in HMS LAFOREY attached to the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla, Harwich Force from August 1914 - September 1915 and then to the 5th Destroyer Flotilla, Eastern Mediterranean Squadron for the final stages of the Gallipoli campaign (October 1915 - January 1916) and in HMS HARPY (also 5th Destroyer Flotilla) on patrol duties off the Dardanelles (May 1916), and 6 pertinent photographs. The letters include good accounts of HMS LAFOREY's part in the Battles of the Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank and of the sinking of two German torpedo boats in the North Sea on 1 May 1915, but also reveal the strain imposed on the destroyers of the Harwich Force and their ship's companies by their high proportion of sea time.
