Two exceptionally vivid and informative ms diaries, with ts transcript (74pp), covering his service as a private in the 10th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment (92nd Infantry Brigade, 31st Division) from the time of their arrival in France from Egypt in March 1916 up to mid June 1916 and giving a very good account of trench routine, conditions and warfare on the Somme front as well as containing interesting comments on working parties, France and the French people, the morale of his fellow soldiers, relations with the Germans opposite and the sensations of being under fire and going home on leave. Together with ms and ts transcripts (48 folios in all) of letters written home from Egypt in January - February 1916 by the Commanding Officer (Lieutenant-Colonel D Burges VC) and other officers in the Battalion describing their service there and living conditions for the officers and men; a postcard photograph of Graystone's Section; Old Comrades Association reunion dinner menus and report from 1937, 1956 and 1957; and photographs of the memorial at Oppy Wood on which his battalion is commemorated and former members of the battalion making a pilgrimage to the wood in April 1956.
