A small collection of papers relating to his service as a private and later corporal in the RMLI, October 1914 - October 1919, and including his education, swimming and war badge certificates, two ms testimonials (one by Captain, later Vice Admiral, F C Fisher), an official Admiralty letter (1p) concerning the incorrect notification of his death in action in the cruiser HMS BLACK PRINCE at the Battle of Jutland, the special Jutland issue of `The Orkney Herald', two very interesting ms letters (4pp and 2pp) to his family describing his experiences in the battleship HMS AJAX (2nd Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet) at Jutland and the destruction of HMS VANGUARD by internal explosion at Scapa Flow in July 1917, and seven related photographs. Hobbs was transferred from HMS BLACK PRINCE, which was sunk with all hands, to HMS AJAX just a few days before the Battle of Jutland.
