Ts memoirs (39pp), written in 1990, describing his employment as a clerical officer in the Directorate of Equipment in the Air Ministry in London (May 1938 - September 1939) and Harrogate (September 1939 - February 1942); his training as a communication rating at HMS ROYAL ARTHUR, the shore establishment at Skegness (February - July 1942); and his subsequent service, apart from a brief interlude at Chatham barracks and Cookham for further training in 1943, as a convoy signalman based on Southend (August 1942 - late 1945) and sailing in merchant ships on coastal convoys on the East coast and through and across the English Channel, with interesting references to the weather and navigational hazards, the attributes of the merchant ships in which he was accommodated and of the naval officers and Merchant Navy personnel whom he met, and his appreciation of the consideration shown by American sailors; and his demobilisation, return to the Civil Service and marriage (1945 - 1948). The memoirs also include useful comments on billeting and on conditions and discipline in naval shore establishments.
