14ms letters and 7ms postcards written by him to his parents (January-October 1918) before and after his capture on 27 March 1918 while serving as a Lieutenant with the 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment, 12th Division, making very critical remarks about Portuguese troops, giving a few hints about conditions in Rastatt (April 1918) and Schweidnitz (June 1918) POW camps, but largely sending requests for goods and insisting he is safer as a POW than in action; also brief diary notes (4pp, March 1918) and detailed ms drafts (9pp) of an account of the attack near Albert at which he was captured, conditions in camp, together with 2 War Office forms requesting a statement of how he was captured and exculpating him for it; official and other corespondence to his parents (March-August 1918) concerning his being reported missing/as a POW.
