Extensive collection of official and private papers covering his varied career, principally in the Indian Army before the First World War (North West Frontier 1897, Indian Staff College 1905 - 1907); as British Military Attaché in Teheran, 1907 - 1911; in the Intelligence Branch of Army HQ, Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, 1917 - 1918; serving with Russian and British forces in Transcaucasia during the last months of the war as an Intelligence Officer on the staff of General Dunsterville; as British Representative to the Azerbaijan Republic, 1919; and as Chief British Commissioner in Transcaucasia, 1920 - 1921. The collection also includes transcriptions of letters written by Stokes' brother, Lieutenant Colonel J W Stokes RAMC, during his command of 3rd West Yorkshire Field Ambulance (49th Division) in the Armentieres and Ypres sectors, April - July 1915.
