19 ms letters written in a light-hearted and occasionally romantic vein to Miss C G Croft, the sister of a university friend, describing his life in South Africa as a lawyer and a subaltern in the Transvaal Scottish (September 1913 - July 1914), his mobilisation and service in German South-West Africa (September - November 1914), return to Britain to join the Border Regiment in January 1915 and service with the 1st Battalion Border Regiment (87th Brigade, 29th Division) at Cape Helles, Gallipoli (March - August 1915) including landing at X Beach (25 April), the First Battle of Krithia (28 April) during which he was wounded, removal to hospital and convalescence in Egypt and his return to Helles in July, criticising the poor medical arrangements surrounding the landing and giving a facetious reference to seeing Violet Asquith in Egypt, together with 3 ms letters (September - October 1915) from his sister to Miss Croft following his death in London (13 September 1915) after being wounded at Gallipoli on 21 August referring to his funeral and a photocopy of his entry in the ROLL OF HONOUR.
