Photocopy of a ts account (14pp) of his service as a Church of England chaplain with the Headquarters of the 1st Division BEF, September 1939 - May 1940, describing his routine work in France during the 'Phoney War' including being in charge of the HQ Mess, conducting services, visiting soldiers in hospital, censoring letters and holding confirmation classes, and, after the German invasion of the Low Countries in May 1940, his attachment to the 1st Field Ambulance RAMC, moving forward into Belgium before retreating through France to Dunkirk, describing his work conducting burials including of German airmen, helping with the wounded, the confusion of the retreat and his evacuation from Bray-Dunes, eventually arriving in Folkestone, including references to his meetings with Major General H R L G (later Field Marshal Lord) Alexander and an encounter with him in London after the war.
