Photocopy of rather discursive ts account (110pp written ca 1991) of his life as a youth in the east end of London in the 1930s and of his service as a private with the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, (1938 - 1945) describing: volunteering for army service in 1938, training in England, arrival in France in September 1939 as part of the 1st Division, his experience there of the 'phoney war' - including visits to brothels - early skirmishes with the Germans, his capture during one of them (18 May 1940, no location given), life as a POW in Stalag XXB (Thorn, Poland), and at Deutsch Eylau, including work on the land and in factories, medical treatment, food, Red Cross parcels and entertainment, the march eastwards in early 1945, his escape from this, his experiences mixing with the Russians and making his way through Russian occupied territory to Odessa, on to Marseilles and finally England and demobilisation.
