Object description

Pocket notebook (152pp) containing brief ms diary, August 1939 - September 1945, and notebook containing ms fair copy (13pp, slightly expanded) of the August 1939 - August 1943 part, covering in summary form his service as a gunner with 316 (Surrey) Searchlight Battery, 5th Searchlight Regiment RE (RA after July 1940) in England (1939 -1941), before sailing to Singapore (August - November 1941), where he was taken prisoner on its fall, his time as a prisoner of war in Changi camp and then in camps in Saigon, Indochina (April 1942 - September 1945), and his repatriation; two scrap books containing items illustrating his experiences, including: letters and cards sent and received (1939 - 1946, including a good fragmentary ms letter (1p nd) describing German bombing raids on Kingston upon Thames), a Territorial Army Notice to Join (Army form E623, June 1939, 'to report within 6 hours'), Field Medical Card (Army and RAF form 3118, November 1945), a War Crimes information form and the ms script for an unidentified POW production of 'Cinderella' in Saigon.
