Field Message Book (AB 153) kept whilst serving as a subaltern (December 1914 - April 1915) in the 16th (Newcastle) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (96th Brigade, 32nd Division) containing brief notes made during their training in Great Britain, together with 11 enclosures including orders and messages (November 1916 - January 1917) apparently relating to his service on the Somme as Battalion Transport Officer and an ms receipt for the purchase of lubricating oil in Sunderland in January 1915, a 96th Brigade Christmas Card (1918), a printed invitation from Newcastle & Gateshead Chamber of Commerce to a reception (November 1919), a printed brochure for a British Legion Battlefield Pilgrimage (August - September 1931) based in Douai, a booklet detailing the history of Douai printed by the Douaisis British Club and a menu for a banquet during the visit, and a number of items from the Second World War including a luggage label from the Merchant Navy Comforts Fund, Christmas airgraphs and cards including one from Captain G G Coury VC (1944), a V-sign postcard, a picture of Winston Churchill and a DAILY MIRROR cartoon from July 1940
