Photocopy of an ms journal (40pp) begun in September 1944 and containing a retrospective account of his service as a telegraphist in the minelaying destroyer HMS EXPRESS on operations in the North Sea and during the Dunkirk evacuation (August 1939 - August 1940), his capture by the Germans after three days in a Carley float in the North Sea following the sinking of EXPRESS and the destroyer HMS IVANHOE on 31 August 1940 and his experiences as a prisoner of war in a hospital in Holland (September 1940), temporary accommodation in Wilhelmshaven (September - October 1940) and the camps at Thorn and Bromberg in Poland (October 1940 - January 1941), Marlag-Milag Nord at Sandbostel (February 1941 - August 1942), Lamsdorf: Stalag VIIIB (August 1942 - April 1943) and Sagan: Stalag Luft III (April 1943 - July 1944); together with a contemporary record of his journey from Sagan back to Marlag-Milag Nord and his imprisonment there (August 1944 - April 1945) and the forced march, under the constant threat of Allied air attack, from the camp across Northern Germany till they were liberated near Lubeck on 2 May and repatriated. The journal includes useful comments about the behaviour towards them of their guards and German and Polish civilians, conditions in Germany and the effects of air raids, and the 'great escape' from Sagan.
