Ts transcript (34pp) of a diary kept by a telegraphist on the staff of the Rear Admiral commanding 1st Cruiser Squadron, Home Fleet from December 1940 to September 1942 and covering his service in HMS NORFOLK (December 1940 - May 1941) on convoy escort duties and patrols in the Denmark Straits, including the operations against the BISMARCK in May 1941, in HMS DEVONSHIRE (June - September 1941) including offensive sweeps in Arctic waters and escorting the first Russian convoy, and in HMS NORFOLK again (October 1941 - January 1942) and HMS LONDON (February - September 1942) on patrol duties in the Denmark Straits and escorting Russian convoys PQ2, QP2 and PQ17; and his subsequent passage out to Egypt in the troopship MONARCH OF BERMUDA (March - May 1943) and appointment to the RFA tanker ENNERDALE (June - August 1943) which took part in the invasion of Sicily and came under heavy air attack. The entries give some indication of the state of his morale.
