5 ms letters (19pp) written to his brother whilst serving with the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment (144th Brigade, 48th Division) on the Western Front and in Italy from May 1915 until his death in August 1918 describing life in the trenches of both theatres, including an attack on Ovillers during the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, and contrasting the quietness of Italy to France particularly with regards to artillery activity and patrolling between the lines, with interesting comments (May 1915) on the sinking of the LUSITANIA, his outraged reaction (July 1916) to the criticism by Brigade Staff Officers of his treatment of the German wounded captured by the battalion on the Somme leading to a fierce attack on the incomprehension of these officers of front line conditions, the local characteristics (June 1918) of his Worcestershire men particularly in their regional accents and the humorous relationship of one of these men to his mule.
