Endearing ms letter (8pp), with ts transcript (3pp), written to his wife while serving as a private in the 2/4th Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) (173rd Brigade, 58th Division) four days before he was posted missing on 26 October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres expressing in simple but moving words his deep love for his wife and children, his anxiety over their safety as a result of the air raids on London and the spirit of comradeship that existed between him and his pals, together with portrait photographs of him and his wife, an undated ms postcard sent to his son on his birthday, the official letters sent to his wife posting him as missing (AFB104-83, November 1917) and concluding that he had died (AFB104-82A, December 1918), a printed message of sympathy sent on behalf of the King and Queen by the Secretary of State for War, Lord Milner, an edition of the DAILY SKETCH (January 1918) including an appeal from his father for any information about his whereabouts, a ts extract (1p) apparently from a newspaper describing his battalion's attack on 26 October 1917, a ts letter from his grand-daughter (June 1991) which briefly describes his wife's life after his death and his 1914-1918 war medal.
